Excellence in building

Craigburn Farm SA 5051
Completed: January 2005
Cost range: $1.8 – $2.1 million

The Winn residence, a successful nomination in the category of “Excellence in building” in the Year of the built Environment 2004 Exemplars National Awards Program, is a multi-level building, set on a sloping site facing a linear park in the housing estate of Blackwood Park.
This project represents a comprehensive approach to sustainability. It combines passive and active design elements that are brought together under an extensive C-Bus building management system.
Active systems include subsidence towers, slar flue, geo-thermal in slab heating and cooling, solar hot water generation for pool and house reticulation, grid connected photo-voltaic power generation and purpose designed in-wall evaporative cooling units.
All climatic and shading conditions, as well as embodied energy of materials have been simulated by  computer modeling program and the resultant electronic control programs developed allow the building to be continuously monitored.
The design has taken into account the human factors side of sustainability by incorporating Feng Sui principles and an extensive application of Alexander's “Pattern language” criteria for harmonious living.
